An Evening with: Eberle Winery

For our July meeting of the San Diego Wine Guild in 2018, we had Eberle Winery presented by Winemaker Chris Eberle, no relation to owner Gary Eberle. Chris graduated from Cal Poly with a bachelor’s degree in agribusiness and has received his Enology certificate from the University of Washington at Pullman. He was Assistant Winemaker at the winery from 2006 to 2009, before traveling the world working vintages in New Zealand, across the US, South Africa, Germany, France and Western Australia. This worldly experience is why in 2015 Eberle Winery owner Gary Eberle asked Chris back to take on the position of Head Winemaker.

We started the tasting portion of the evening with two wines. The first was a Eberle Estate Vineyard Chardonnay 2016 (link). It worked well with the popcorn and cheesy potato casserole. The second pour of our program was Côtes-du-Rôbles Blanc 2017 (link). The last white wine of the evening was a Mill Road Vineyard Viognier 2017 (link). 

The fourth wine tonight was a Sangiovese 2016 (link). This wine had an interesting nose & delectable palate that would have paired well with beef, veal, venison or poultry. The next wine up to taste was the Steinbeck Vineyard Syrah 2016 (link). It was very tasty with the steak carpaccio & bacon wrapped potato bites. The next round of wines to taste were the Cabernet Sauvignon - Syrah 2016 (link) & Reserve Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 (link). These full bodies red wines were opulent and etherial, possessing character and structure that will age for a long time. Our evening ended with a Muscat Canelli 2017 (link). This floral & subtle semi-dry wine was a perfect end as it was sweet enough to stand in as dessert, and the orange blossom flavor paired well with the Italian Orange Zest Cookies.
