What is Corkage?

What is Corkage?

Corkage is a fee charged for the opportunity to bring your own bottle of wine with you to the restaurant.

Corkage Etiquette & Tips:

  • A waiter or sommelier must be the one to open your bottle and pour your beverage into the glass,
  • Never bring a bottle of wine that is offered on the wine list of the establishment. If in doubt, please call ahead to verify.
  • It’s polite to offer your sommelier a taste of the wine, especially if it is something special or unique.
  • Tip as though you had purchased a bottle from the wine list.
  • Please do not bring a bottle of wine you bought at a convenience store or supermarket.
  • When you are seated, let your server know you have a bottle(s) for corkage.
  • If you are planning to have a very rare, very old, or very special bottle, consider making arrangements with the sommelier to have your wine delivered from your Wine Storage Facitlty directly to the restaurant.
  • A restaurant is not required to offer corkage so it should be seen as a perk & a privilege.

Does Corkage just apply to Wine?

Today most restaurants who offer the ability to bring your own wine, will allow you to also bring beer or spirtis to enjoy at the restaurant as well. Please remember to check with restaurants in advance to verify thier policy regarding these alternative options.
